Tony Palmer follows Leonard Cohen, a legendary Canadian singer and songwriter, filming his 1972 concert tour of Europe and Israel. The British documentalist chronicles a difficult time in Cohen’s life – his recent album “Songs of Love and Hate” was selling poorly, his record label, CBS Records, was one step from ending cooperation with the artist and the ongoing tour was intented to reanimate his decling career.
The documentary shows diverse turbulence throughout the tour – sound system problems, difficult confrontations with fans and the artist’s personal crisis, leading to emotional breakdown and taking LSD on the backstage. The title of the film comes from Cohen’s song – “Bird on the Wire”.
